Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
