A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share comparison photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

This medication is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.

Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at home.

Within moments of joining one group, a vendor posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, health issues or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these groups, posts show dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated harmful content on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already seen patients harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to potentially serious health risks”.
